Instrumentation

Our facility has four NMR instruments on site:

  • Varian Unity Inova 600
  • Varian Unity Inova 600

This machine is located in Room 320.

Inova 600 features

The Inova 600 contains the following features:

  • 5 mm HX liquids probe with z-gradient
  • 5 mm HCN liquids probe with z-gradient
  • 3.2 mm H(F)X MAS probe
  • 1.6 mm H(F)XY MAS probe
  • 3.2 mm H(F)XY MAS probe
  • 5.0 mm H(F)X MAS probe
  • Low gamma accessory for MAS probes
  • 3 RF channels, plus a deuterium lock
  • Bruker Avance III 400
  • Bruker Avance III 400

The Avance 400 is the latest addition to the NMR family. It is used exclusively for solids. A high temperature laser heated probe is the latest probe that we have added. It is located in Room 320.

Bruker Avance 400 features

The Bruker Avance 400 features:

List out specification as they've been listed out with the other devices.

  • Bruker Avance Neo 400 at NMR.
  • Avance Neo 400

The Avance Neo 400 is our newest NMR instrument, installed in 2022. This instrument is configured for high sample throughput with a 64-position autosampler. It is located in Room 338.

Bruker Avance Neo 400 features

The Avance Neo 400 contains the following features:

  • 5 mm iProbe
  • Two RF channels
  • SampleCase Plus automated sample changer
  • Bruker Avance III 500
  • Bruker Avance III 500

The AMX500 was acquired in 1990 and was upgraded around 2012 to an Avance III. It can been used for both liquid and solid NMR. It is located in Room 338.

Bruker Avance III 500 features

The Avance III 500 contains the following features:

  • 5mm BB observe with z-axis pulsed field gradient (50 G/cm)
  • 5mm BB inverse probe
  • 1.7mm C/N/H TXI probe with z-gradient
  • 5mm C/N/H TXI probe with z-gradient
  • 10 mm BB probe with low Si background
  • CP-MAS capability
  • MAS (4 mm, 2.5 mm and 1.3 mm) probes
  • Three RF channels
  • Full variable temperature capability

SpinWorks

SpinWorks is an NMR Spectra processing program developed at the U of M that runs on Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

The SpinWorks software package provides easy, basic offline processing and analysis of 1D, 2D and 3D NMR data on personal computers.

Full support is included for:

  • Bruker (XwinNMR/UXNMR, 1D to 3D)
  • Varian or Agilent (Unix VNMR/VNMRJ, 1D to 3D)
  • JEOL (1D and 2D)
  • Processed NMRPIPE (1D to 3D)
  • Magritek (1D), Anasazi (CDFF, 1D and 2D)
  • TECMAG (1D) data

JCAMP-DX format is also supported for 1D only. The following indirect detection modes are included:

  • States
  • TPPI
  • States-TPPI
  • Single Detection (QF)
  • Echo-antiecho

There are two distinct versions of SpinWorks. SpinWorks 4 will work on any Windows system supporting the .NET runtime. Essentially, Windows XP and up.

The newest version is Java-based and will run on Windows, MacOS X and Linux. This version requires the Java JDK, not just the Java JRE, to be installed. The Java JDK is available free from Oracle. This version is still in beta testing. It is intended this version will eventually be “open source."
