Scholarships and Awards

Department awards ($1 000 – $5 000)

Our graduate students benefit each year from the generosity of benefactors who have endowed awards in the Department of Chemistry. These awards are distributed each fall to graduate students in recognition of their outstanding academic and research performance over the preceding year.  All currently enrolled graduate students with a GPA of 3.50 are eligible to apply (deadline announced each August/September).

In Fall 2019, the Department of Chemistry administered over $100 000 in such awards to ~55 graduate students in our program averaging ~$1,250 each.

Bursaries to support graduate students with financial need are also available.

A complete list of scholarships, awards and bursaries is available as a searchable database here.

UMGF ($14 000 M.Sc., $18 000 Ph.D.)

University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships in the Department of Chemistry are awarded each spring (application deadline in February/March). Students already enrolled in our M.Sc. and Ph.D. students will be invited to apply at that time.  Eligibility and award details are provided here.

International students (IGSES, IGSS)(~$5 400)

Additional awards are available for international students to offset their higher tuition fees. At the time of application, international students are automatically considered for the International Graduate Student Entrance Scholarship (IGSES). Once in the program, students can apply to renew this funding for subsequent years (International Graduate Student Scholarship-IGSS) before March 1st each year. Eligibility and award details are provided here.

External awards (NSERC, CIHR, Research Manitoba)($17 500 and up)

Several of our students hold major awards through federal and provincial funding agencies. Students apply to these external agencies directly. Eligibility and award details are provided here.
