PhD Position in Bioelectrochemistry on Cancer Initiation
The Laboratory of Bioanalytics and Clinical Chemistry is looking for an enthusiastic new group member to take on a challenging project working on the application of electrochemistry to study cancer development in human cells.
Position
The research of this postdoctoral position lies at the intersection between electrochemistry and medical sciences. Our group is looking for innovative strategies to tackle medical problems, such as drug resistance, diseases related to mitochondrial dysfunctions and cancer development. The main focus of this position lies in the area of electrochemical probe development, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and bioelectrochemistry.
This position is available for January or May 2020.
University
We are an interdisciplinary group of chemists and biologists at the University of Manitoba. Our chemistry department has a well-established and equipped research facility, including mass spectrometry, NMR and instruments in the Manitoba Institute for Materials (MIM), and is supported by strong research links with other University of Manitoba departments, including Microbiology, and Biosystems Engineering. Position Description
• Completed undergraduate education in chemistry or biology (or a connected field)
• If a degree was obtained in the field of biology, basic knowledge in chemistry is required (e.g. basic classes in chemistry should have been part of the undergraduate curriculum)
• If no Master’s degree has been obtained previously, students are commonly admitted to the Master’s program and directly transferred into the PhD program after 12 months of studies if requirements are met • Training includes standard electrochemistry, analytical methods, cell culture and techniques in molecular biology 2
• Specialization is offered in Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM) and Nanotechnology
• The above mentioned techniques will be employed to investigate radiation induced damage in human epidermal keratinocytes
• This project involves the fabrication of specialized electrochemical probes to study single cells and cells in population by SECM
Desired skills and experience
• Pronounced interest in bioelectrochemistry and medically related scientific problems
• Capability to work as a team-player as well as under own initiative
• Laboratory experience aside from the curriculum and a Master’s degree is NOT required, but will be seen as a big plus
