Co-op Application Process for *Computational Sciences, *Physical and Life Sciences, and *Psychology Students

You generally apply during the winter term of your 2nd year, while completing the majority of the required 2nd year courses and a minimum of 54 credit hours. Please note that even if you are using the summer term after your 2nd year to meet these requirements, you should still submit an application in February. You may apply before you declare a major but you must declare a major by August if you are accepted into Science Co-op.

Application for 2021 is now closed for these programs:

  • Biochemistry
  • Biological Sciences
  • Chemistry
  • Data Science
  • Genetics
  • Mathematics
  • Microbiology
  • Physics & Astronomy
  • Psychology
  • Statistics
  • Joint Honours Computer Science with A) Mathematics; B) Physics & Astronomy or C) Statistics

If you are in Computer Science, Major or Honours, there will be an information session in March and applications will open in April.

  1. Students must complete the Intake Form which is linked at the bottom of this page.
  2. Within one week, the Co-op office will then provide details about the application process by e-mail and the student must complete their Application on careerConnect by February 28, 2021. The application will require a current resume and a web transcript.
  3. The Co-op office will notify students of the application results via e-mail by April 30, 2021.
    • If you satisfy all eligibility requirements, you will be invited for an intake interview which would be conducted remotely in May and June 2021.
  4. Students will find out if they have been accepted into Science Co-op via e-mail by the end of July 2021.

Students accepted in 2021 would be eligible for their first work term in January 2022 or May 2022.

You may run your UM Achieve report or contact a Science Academic Student Advisor to check your academic requirements if necessary.

First and second year degree course requirements must be completed before doing your 1st work term. For some programs, the following courses must also be completed:

Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology

  • MBIO 2360/CHEM 2360 Biochemistry 1
  • MBIO 2370/CHEM 2370 Biochemistry 2
  • MBIO 3010 Mechanisms of Microbial Diseases (for Microbiology only)
  • MBIO 3410 Molecular Biology

Biological Sciences

  • BIOL 2520 Cell Biology
    • EIP, CMD and Integrative require either:
      • Both CHEM/MBIO 2770 and 2780
      • or All of CHEM 2210, 2360, 2370


  • PSYC 1200 Introductory to Psychology
  • PSYC 2250 Introduction to Psychological Research
  • PSYC 2260 Introduction to Research Methods in Psychology (minimum C grade)


  • STAT 2300 Principles of Data Collection (or STAT 3480)
  • STAT 3450 Linear Models (or STAT 3470)
