NSERC 2021 research grant recipients announced

From the Subarctic to Subatomic Physics several big ideas are being funded at the Faculty of Science. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) recently announced the recipients of the 2021 Discovery Grants Program.

This program supports ongoing programs of research with long-term goals rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects. They are considered “grants in aid” of research, as they provide long-term operating funds and can facilitate access to funding from other programs, but are not meant to support the full costs of a research program. The NSERC 2021 Research Discovery Grant Faculty of Science recipients are:

  • Faut Balci (biological sciences) – Neural Basis of Magnitude Representations and Metric Error Monitoring in Mice.
  • Mark Belmonte (biological sciences) – Understanding the Brassica napus – Sclerotinia sclerotiorum pathosystem.
  • Wouter Deconinck (physics and astronomy) – Canadian Participation in the Electron-Ion Collider.
  • Jillian Detwiler (biological sciences) – Parasite-modified behaviour in freshwater systems: Context dependence and the ecological role of signaling molecules.
  • Gerald Gwinner (physics and astronomy) – High bandwidth power supplies for optical pumping of francium atoms for atomic parity violation studies and – Absolute nuclear charge radii via EUV spectroscopy at an electron beam ion trap.
  • Ayush Kumar (microbiology) – Determining physiological role(s) of Resistance-Nodulation-Division efflux pumps of Acinetobacter baumannii.
  • Alexandre Leblanc (statistics) – Nonparametric Statistics and Sports Analytics.
  • Francis Lin (physics and astronomy) – Investigation of Immune Cell Trafficking in Complex Cellular Environment.
  • John Markham (biological sciences) – Ecosystem engineers in the subarctic.
  • Eric Schippers (mathematics) – Differential and Integral Operators on Riemann Surfaces and the Geometry and Algebra of Sewing.
  • Maxime Turgeon (statistics) – Dimension Reduction and Complex High-Dimensional Data.
  • Shaowei Wang (computer science) – Effectively managing and leveraging crowdsourced knowledge for software engineering.
  • Jane Waterman (biological sciences) – Sociality and reproductive tactics in ground-dwelling squirrels: cooperation, tolerance and reproductive skew.
