Academic Integrity
As an instructor, part of your academic duty is to ensure your students are well informed about what constitutes academic misconduct and what penalties exist. Direct your students to the links above and make use of the following documents.
Common acts of academic misconduct
The table below lists common acts of academic misconduct and the associated penalties which the department giving the course can impose plus any further penalties the associate dean of science can give in very serious cases. It is recommended that this table be attached to your course outline and, at the very least, the link should be made very clear on the course outline.
Steps to take
Here is a step by step outline of what to do if you suspect an act of academic misconduct has occurred in conjunction with an assignment, laboratory report, term test or final examination.
Avoidance of Partner Conflicts of Interest
(Posted: 22 March 2021)
The Faculty of Science Dean’s Office and Department Heads have worked together to create the following working guidelines to help us all navigate the difficult arena of conflicts of interest between spouses and partners. We have deliberately tried to provide a general approach, as opposed to attempting to address each type of conflict that may arise, to leave the required flexibility, but also provide the required perspectives.
Guiding principle:
An employee of the University must not supervise his or her partner/spouse, or make decisions/recommendations that affect the partner in anyway, directly or indirectly.
- With regards to a direct supervisory role:
- a Dean must not supervise an AD or Head or support staff member or graduate student who is a partner;
- a Head must not supervise a faculty member, support staff member or graduate student who is a partner;
- an AD must not supervise a support staff member who is a partner;
- a PI must not supervise a support staff member or graduate student who is a
- Both partners must not serve on the same committee that will be making a recommendation to a Dean or a Head on awards, hiring, promotion or
- Committees considering the hiring, promotion, tenure or awards of the partner of a Dean, an Associate Dean or a Head will be chaired by an Associate Dean assigned by the Provost (in the case of the partner of the Dean) or the Dean.
- A partner elected to a search committee for a faculty position, Head or Dean must recuse herself/himself if their partner applies for the
- The partner of a Dean or Head must not serve on a committee that is reviewing or considering the appeal of a case previously ruled upon by the Dean or
- A partner must not serve on or chair a committee considering the tenure or promotion of their partner
- A partner must not nominate their partner for an award or committee
- A partner must not provide input to a committee considering a partner’s application or nomination.
- A partner must recuse herself/himself from the consideration of any matters affecting their partner (be the partner faculty, staff, or student) in Department Council or on any
- The above list is not intended to be exhaustive and if other perceived conflicts of interest appear in other situations, they should be addressed to the Dean, or if involving the Dean, to the Provost, for
