PIMS postdoctoral fellowships

This fellowship is for one year and is renewable, contingent on satisfactory progress, for at most one additional year. Successful candidates will be expected to teach two courses per academic year. The value of this fellowship at the University of Manitoba is $62,000 per year.

What is the PIMS postdoctoral fellowships?

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Manitoba invites applications from outstanding young researchers in the mathematical sciences for nomination for PIMS Postdoctoral Fellowships for the year 2023-2024 (the fellowship may be taken up at any time between September 1, 2023, and January 1, 2024).

What are the eligibility requirements?

  1. PhD or equivalent (or expected to be awarded by December 31, 2023).
  2. Research overlaps with the department’s existing areas of research strength (successful candidates must be nominated for the fellowship by one or more professors in the department).

How to apply?

Once you determine your eligibility for the fellowship, start by gathering all the necessary documents. Carefully follow the provided guidelines and submit your complete application by the specified deadline.

Step 1: Find a sponsor at the University of Manitoba

(This should be done as soon as possible but no later than November 10, 2023).

Applicants should upload:

  • a cover letter containing the name of sponsor(s), the person or people in the department whose research overlaps with the applicant’s research areas (applicants are strongly encouraged to contact these people to discuss common research interests) — applications without this information will not be considered;
  • curriculum vitae;
  • research statement;
  • publication list;
  • information about teaching experience (if any);
  • applicants should also arrange for at least two reference letters to be uploaded;
  • special justification statement if the time from PhD is longer than 3 years.

Further information for step 1Contact Dr. Stephanie Portet.

Submit your applications online at MathJobs.org

Step 2: Upload your complete application

This should be done only after Step 1 is completed, and only if the applicant received a confirmation email from the PIMS-UM Site Director that they will be nominated for this fellowship.

A complete application includes:

  • cover letter
  • CV
  • list of publications
  • research statement
  • EDI statement
  • three reference letters, one of which must be your sponsor

Further information about step 2 can be found on the PIMS website and MathJobs.

Postdoctoral fellow in within-host models of vaccination and therapeutics

This fellowship is for one year and is renewable for one year, contingent on satisfactory progress. The value of this fellowship at the University of Manitoba is $50,000 per year.

What is the Postdoctoral fellow in within-host models of vaccination and therapeutics?

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at the University of Manitoba to work on the project “Vaccination and antimicrobials, from the individual to the population: Real-time modelling and data analysis to project therapeutic intervention” funded by OMNI/REUNI.

Vaccination is a critical piece of the pharmaceutical arsenal in the fight against (re-)emerging infectious diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that deploying a treatment and vaccination campaign in the middle of a crisis poses specific complications, particularly when the efficacy and protection of different interventions against the pathogen’s evolutionary landscape may not be fully understood.

Rapid and accurate forecasting of drug and vaccine dosing needs are paramount to successful public health planning. Here, we will develop within-host mathematical models of pathogen evolution and pharmaceutical interventions to support real-time, population-level public health decision-making.

The work will be co-supervised by J. Arino, K.-L. Liao, S. Portet (University of Manitoba) and M. Craig (Université de Montréal).

What are the eligibility requirements?

  1. Hold or have completed a PhD in applied mathematics, data science or a related discipline and have an excellent academic record.
  2. Demonstrated mathematical modelling capacities using data-driven quantitative analyses, differential equations, stochastic modelling and/or mixed-effects modelling.
  3. Knowledge of epidemiology and physiological processes relevant to immunology is an asset.
  4. Have excellent communication and organization skills.

How to apply?

Applicants should submit in one PDF file:

  • CV including date of the thesis defence and summary of the Ph.D. thesis, previous and current academic positions.
  • A complete list of publications (with highlighting up to three most significant papers and explaining your individual. contribution to each of them with 3-4 sentences)
  • A research statement (2-3 pages).
  • The names and contact information of three referees.

The University of Manitoba is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from women, racialized persons/persons of colour, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, persons of all sexual orientations and genders, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.
