Welcome to the Department of Microbiology, located in the historic Buller Building on the Fort Garry Campus of the University of Manitoba. Founded in 1906 as part of the Manitoba Agricultural College, the department was officially moved to the Faculty of Science in 1952 under the headship of Dr. Norman James. We are proud of its history as part of the formation of the University of Manitoba, originally founded in 1877 as Western Canada’s first university.
We are the only stand-alone microbiology department in Canada, sustained through the active research of our 15 faculty members, the hard work of our support staff and the ongoing participation of our many graduate and undergraduate students. While the department stands as an independent unit, our program also emphasizes integration and collaboration with other science programs on campus and research institutes within the larger community. Its wide spread is a reflection of the importance of microbiology in so many disciplines.
