Programs of study in Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology, in conjunction with other departments, offers several programs of study. The graduate programs in Microbiology entail the study of viruses, bacteria, and fungi in isolation or as microbial communities that thrive in water, soil, and plant and animal hosts. These systems are approached through the lenses of Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular, and Synthetic Biology, Genomics, and Evolution.

  • Department of Microbiology history

The Department of Microbiology is located in the historic Buller Building on the Fort Garry Campus of the University of Manitoba. Founded in 1906 as part of the Manitoba Agricultural College, the department was officially moved to the Faculty of Science in 1952 under the headship of Dr. Norman James. We are proud of its history as part of the formation of the University of Manitoba, originally founded in 1877 as Western Canada’s first university.

We are the only stand-alone Microbiology Department in Canada, sustained through the active research of our 15 research faculty members, the hard work of our support staff, and the ongoing participation of our many graduate and undergraduate students. While the department stands as an independent unit, our program also emphasizes integration and collaboration with other science programs on campus and research institutes within the larger community. Its widespread is a reflection of the importance of microbiology in so many disciplines.
