Research and Teaching Interests

Summer Students Wanted: The Yurkov Lab is looking for students interested in Environmental Microbiology for this summer. Students will be paid, and will work in the lab from May 2019 through August 2019. If interested, please email Vladimir.yurkov@umanitoba.ca

We study the microbial diversity in extreme environments, with particular interest given to aerobic anoxygenic phototrophs (AAP) and biological heavy metal transformations. Bacteria isolated from locations such as mine drainage sites, hypersaline lakes, hot temperature springs, and hydrothermal vents have evolved unique characteristics allowing them to thrive under harsh conditions. Investigation into the properties of these microorganisms in nature and laboratory settings is the major focus of our lab.
