Hey Class of 2020!

Congratulations on graduation! For those that do not remember, I am Steven Wong, President of the Science Students’ Association (SSA) in the 2016-2017 academic year. I know that this is probably not what you had envisioned going into 2020, and that you were hoping to celebrate your success with your family and friends. Given COVID-19 right now, everyone is affected negatively. However, to try to take your mind off of it for a bit, I thought I would share with you a photo. Some of you graduating now after 4 years of studies may see yourself in this photo. At the beginning of the 2016 school year, during student life orientation, myself and Vice-President Kay Xu spoke to you about our experience within the Faculty of Science and encouraged all of you to not just focus on your studies, but to get involved with extra-curricular activities such as joining SSA, Let’s Talk Science, Chem Club, devClub, OPUS, etc. That way, you will have fun studying while making new friends and building up some valuable skills for the working world. I am sure some of you have been involved and that is great! Now that you graduated, I am sure most of you already have plans after graduation. You may already have a job lined up after graduation (or after the COVID-19 pandemic), or you may already be working right now. You may already have been accepted to medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or veterinarian school. You may even have plans to continue with graduate studies. However, for those who have no idea what you will be doing after graduation, try not to fear. I was in this position before and I eventually found my way. You will find your way eventually and it will all work out! 🙂 Once again, we want to congratulate you on all of your successes and your graduation. You are a part of history and a unique group of individuals that is the Class of 2020. COVID-19 can take away your convocation, but they cannot take away all that you have accomplished and your degree. Stay strong and stay healthy everyone! -SSA President, Steven Wong
