Mathematician, Co-founder, Descartes Labs
Rick Chartrand spent 11 years at Los Alamos National Laboratory, working in applied mathematics research and on classified projects, primarily in image processing and related inverse problems. He and four colleagues left LANL in late 2014 to start a new company, with an initial focus on satellite imagery and agriculture. Descartes Labs has since grown to over 125 employees, and is the largest venture-capital-funded company in the state of New Mexico. The company has gathered and preprocessed many petabytes of data from increasingly diverse sources, and has sold data and analysis products to clients in agriculture, energy, finance, government, and other sectors.
