STATISTICS SEMINAR – Oct. 8

Join Dr. Katherine Davies from the University of Manitoba for her talk on Thursday, October 8th about “Inference for Generalized Exponential Cure Rate Model and an Empirical Study”.

ABSTRACT:

In this talk, after providing some background, I will motivate the concept of cure rate models. From there, i will discuss cure rate models in detail, including well known cure models. Then, within a competing cause framework and assuming the long-term survival probability to depend on a set of risk factors, I will present how to implement the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm to determine maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) of the model parameters. This is followed by the main contribution of this work which is the development of the stochastic expectation maximization (SEM) algorithm to determine the MLEs. Through a simulation study, assuming the lifetimes to independently follow a generalized exponential distribution, I will demonstrate the performance of the two methods. For illustrative purposes, analysis of a breast cancer survival data is also presented.
