Funding

As of September 1, 2023, all newly admitted students to a Computer Science graduate program at the University of Manitoba are automatically considered for financial support. M.Sc. students admitted to the program are funded at a minimum rate of $20,000/year for the first two years of their program. Ph.D. students receive a minimum of $23,000/year for the first four years of their program. This funding can come from a variety of sources, including supervisor grants, scholarships, and work as a teaching assistant, grader, or sessional instructor.  Maintaining funding is contingent on satisfactory progress.

University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF)

The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) offers University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships to strong graduate students (both Canadian and International). These awards are valued at $14,000 per year for two years for M.Sc. students and $18,000 per year for four years for Ph.D. students.

Computer Science Entrance Awards (CSEA)

The Department of Computer Science offers Entrance Awards to strong incoming graduate students (both Canadian and international). These awards are valued at $7,000 per year for up to two years for M.Sc. students and $9,000 per year for up to four years for Ph.D. students.

NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships – Doctoral and Master’s Program

Canadian students (and official permanent residents) are encouraged to apply for NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships (CGS – D for Doctoral students, CGS – M for Master’s students). NSERC graduate fellowships range from $17,500 to $35,000 per year. Top-up scholarships from the University providing an additional $5,000 per year are available.

International Graduate Student Entrance Scholarships

International Master’s students who are evaluated by the Faculty of Graduate Studies as having an incoming grade point average of 3.5 or higher receive the International Graduate Student Entrance Scholarship (IGSES), which is valued at approximately up to $6000, to be applied against tuition fees. No application is necessary.

Financial Support from Faculty Research Grant

Most faculty members hold research grants from which they may provide financial support to graduate students under their supervision. Specific amounts are determined on an individual basis by each student’s supervisor.

Working as a Marker, Teaching Assistant, or Sessional Instructor

Graduate students have the opportunity to work as a marker, teaching assistant, or sessional lecturer at the University of Manitoba to earn additional income. This work is not required for the program.
